Squat Rack vs. Power Rack: What’s the Difference?

When setting up your home gym, squat racks and power racks are often confused, as they look similar. However, they serve very different purposes. Do you need a squat rack or a power rack? Which one should you buy? How much space will you save by getting a squat rack vs. a power rack?

What is a Squat Rack?

A squat rack is a bare bones piece of equipment that is really only designed for squatting and bench pressing outside of the rack. It is essentially a pair of uprights, and is often referred to as a “half-rack” because you can only lift inside of it. A squat rack usually has some plate storage pegs and a pull-up bar, and that is about it.

Pros of a Squat Rack

  1. Space Saving: Squat racks are much more compact than power racks, making them perfect for small gyms.

  2. Cost Effective: Because they don’t require as much steel, squat racks are cheaper than power racks.

  3. Portable: Squat racks are much lighter than power racks, making them easy to move around.

  4. Full Range of Motion: Without an upper set of bars, you can do overhead presses and other exercises that require full overhead movement.

Cons of a Squat Rack

  1. Safety Concerns: One of the biggest drawbacks of a squat rack is the lack of safety. If you drop a barbell, it is going to fall. You can add spotter arms, but this increases the risk of the rack tipping over.

What is a Power Rack?

A power rack is a 4-post monstrosity of steel that is designed to hold your weight (and bars and plates) while you lift. Power racks usually have safety pins or straps, a pull-up bar, and extra posts for storing plates.

Pros of a Power Rack

  1. Added Stability: Power racks are much more stable than squat racks because of their weight and footprint. Adding plates to the rack also helps with stability.

Cons of a Power Rack

  1. Space and Weight: Power racks take up much more space and are much heavier than squat racks.

  2. Cost: Power racks are more expensive than squat racks due to the extra steel.

Is it Safe to Squat Without a Rack?

It is possible to squat without a rack, but it is not the safest thing in the world. If you are able to bail out of your squats (by dropping the bar), then you can get by without a rack. Just make sure you have the right equipment, such as bumper plates and a solid lifting surface, to avoid damaging your floor.

Squat racks and power racks both have their places in a home gym, but you need to decide what is best for you:

  • Get a Squat Rack if you are short on space and money, you want to be able to do overhead presses, and you are able to bail out of your squats.

  • Get a Power Rack if you need stability, safety, and the ability to do a variety of exercises.

Either way, you should now understand the difference between a squat rack and a power rack, and can make an informed decision about your home gym.
