When setting up your home gym, squat racks and power racks are often confused, as they look similar. However, they serve very different purposes. Do you need a squat rack or a power rack? Which one should you buy? How much space will you save by getting a squat rack vs. a power rack?
What is a Squat Rack?
A squat rack is a bare bones piece of equipment that is really only designed for squatting and bench pressing outside of the rack. It is essentially a pair of uprights, and is often referred to as a “half-rack” because you can only lift inside of it. A squat rack usually has some plate storage pegs and a pull-up bar, and that is about it.
Pros of a Squat Rack
-
Space Saving: Squat racks are much more compact than power racks, making them perfect for small gyms.
-
Cost Effective: Because they don’t require as much steel, squat racks are cheaper than power racks.
-
Portable: Squat racks are much lighter than power racks, making them easy to move around.
-
Full Range of Motion: Without an upper set of bars, you can do overhead presses and other exercises that require full overhead movement.
Cons of a Squat Rack
-
Safety Concerns: One of the biggest drawbacks of a squat rack is the lack of safety. If you drop a barbell, it is going to fall. You can add spotter arms, but this increases the risk of the rack tipping over.
What is a Power Rack?
A power rack is a 4-post monstrosity of steel that is designed to hold your weight (and bars and plates) while you lift. Power racks usually have safety pins or straps, a pull-up bar, and extra posts for storing plates.
Pros of a Power Rack
-
Added Stability: Power racks are much more stable than squat racks because of their weight and footprint. Adding plates to the rack also helps with stability.
Cons of a Power Rack
-
Space and Weight: Power racks take up much more space and are much heavier than squat racks.
-
Cost: Power racks are more expensive than squat racks due to the extra steel.
Is it Safe to Squat Without a Rack?
It is possible to squat without a rack, but it is not the safest thing in the world. If you are able to bail out of your squats (by dropping the bar), then you can get by without a rack. Just make sure you have the right equipment, such as bumper plates and a solid lifting surface, to avoid damaging your floor.
Final Thoughts
Squat racks and power racks both have their places in a home gym, but you need to decide what is best for you:
-
Get a Squat Rack if you are short on space and money, you want to be able to do overhead presses, and you are able to bail out of your squats.
-
Get a Power Rack if you need stability, safety, and the ability to do a variety of exercises.
Either way, you should now understand the difference between a squat rack and a power rack, and can make an informed decision about your home gym.
